Choir
The combined Senior and Auslan Choir is available for students in grades three to six. Students receive the benefit of vocal training as well as learning to sign in Australian Sign Language (Auslan). Choir is a fantastic opportunity for students to make new friends, learn to sing and enjoy music together. Students who participate in Choir have the opportunity to represent their school at performances, workshops and camps, both locally on the Tablelands, in Cairns and across Queensland.
Our Auslan Signing Choir have represented Mareeba State School at Creative Generations (CGEN) - State Schools Onstage in Brisbane for the past few years, and have done so again this year. This event is televised and our talented students always do us proud!
Instrumental Music
Our Instrumental Music program is available for students in years 4 to 6. Students are able to learn to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument under the tutelage of our Instrumental Music teacher. This program is available to students at an additional cost to cover administrative expenses. School instruments can also be hired out. Students then have the opportunity to play in the school's Concert Band that performs at school and community functions. Science has proven that learning an instrument at a young age has far reaching benefits for brain development, creativity, social skills and easing stress.
Giving Back Auslan to the Community' Program
It is with great pleasure and pride that we present this program. The Auslan Sign Language program is accessible to all students (Prep to Year 6) to promote school-based, local and regional community participation, as well as showcasing Mareeba State School in the wider community. The program includes: choir, teaching basic Auslan language to the community by students and learning Auslan through songs and games.
