It is with very mixed emotions that I announce to the Mareeba SS community that I have been appointed the permanent principal to Lawnton SS, which is located on Brisbane’s north side.  Lawnton SS has approximately 800 students enrolled, and appears quite established and progressive.  While I would dearly love to remain as principal at Mareeba SS, it has been a desire of our family to move closer to Brisbane to allow our daughter time with her grandparents who live at Burpengary.  I have never lived in the city so it will be a significant learning curve for me.  I will commence at Lawnton SS next term.  Mrs Hannah Simpson has been appointed Acting Principal at Mareeba SS for the remainder of the school year.  Mrs Simpson will commence in the role from the start of Semester 2, and will be visiting later in the week to participate in a detailed handover.

With COVID-19 restrictions progressively easing, school sporting events are now able to be re-established from Term 3 onwards.  Our inter-school and representative competitions for both indoor and outdoor sports will kick off again in Term 3, in line with the Queensland Government’s Stage 3 easing of restrictions from 10 July 2020. Some district and regional school sport events will also commence in Term 3 in keeping with the Roadmap, AIS Framework and Return to Play Guide.  Our HPE staff are currently mapping out dates for events to be held across Semester 2, and these will be published accordingly.

Traditionally, end of semester report cards would be issued upon the conclusion of Term 2.  With the disruptions to student learning caused by COVID-19, report cards will now be issued from 13th August.  The extra time provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning and competency, and allows teachers time to prepare a quality report card for your child.  Contact the school if you have any questions regarding your child’s report card.

Enrolments for Prep 2021 are now open to families.  If your child is turning 5 by June 30 next year, they are eligible to enrol into Prep at Mareeba State School.  As you know, Mareeba SS has the most up to date, modern Prep facilities in town.  The classrooms are brand new, fully air-conditioned, and come fully equipped with the latest learning technology to support your child’s learning.  Our Prep teachers and teacher aides are outstanding.  Most are local ladies and know the community well.  The Australian Curriculum is fully embedded across Mareeba SS which provides a comprehensive learning platform for all Prep children. Contact the school to collect an enrolment package, or visit our website.

School holidays are just around the corner.  School will break for holidays on Friday 26th June, and will return on Monday 13th July.  Even though school is closing for the holidays, it is important that we have your most up to date phone numbers and addresses.  If your details have changed, ensure you contact the school and update these as quickly as possible.  Up to date phone numbers are critical – we do need to contact families for various reasons during the school day, especially when your child is sick or injured, therefore having the most up to date details is essential.  Remember, Friday 17th July is the Cairns Show public holiday.  Our school will be closed on this day.

Finally, as this is my last Principal's Report for Term 2, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of our school staff.  This term has been like no other in living memory, and the disruptions and challenges caused by COVID-19 not only challenged our school, but every school, department and organisation across our nation.  Throughout the process, our teams at Mareeba SS were outstanding, and I wish to acknowledge their work and dedication to the children of Mareeba.  At all times, our children’s needs, and the needs of their families, were at the forefront of the minds of all our staff here at the school.  Please join me in congratulating the outstanding commitment of our school staff.
