Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 3 - and what a jam packed term we have ahead of us now that some COVID restrictions have begun to ease.  I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone for my welcomed return to Mareeba SS.  As I have said before, hopefully I will find my way back to the school, the people and the students that make me the happiest, Mareeba, and a few very short weeks later here I am, back again, chomping at the bit to work with our amazing students, staff and families.  Welcome also to Ms Brooke Carmody who has joined our team as Deputy Principal, Early Years.  Whilst it's imperative that your child's classroom teacher is the first point of call for any questions or concerns, our Management team is always here to help.

  • Ms Brooke Carmody Line Manages Prep and Year 1 and leads our explicit teaching coaching team.
  • Mrs Nyree Burton Line Manages Years 2, 3 & 4 and leads our attendance and student engagement team.
  • Mr Michael Nielsen Line Manages Years 5 & 6 and leads our Positive Behaviour for Learning team.
  • Mrs Pina Carroll Line Manages our Inclusive Practices team across Prep – Year 6.

As mentioned earlier in the year, the Mareeba State School Auslan Signing Choir was accepted to present at the 2020 Creative-Generation – State Schools Onstage performance.  As with all things in 2020, COVID has put a spin on this event. While the choir would have been madly packing ready to board planes to Brisbane for their big performance this week, we were still very excited to have the opportunity to film our act last Friday right here in sunny Mareeba.  This unique experience was definitely memorable with all students putting in 100% effort.  A big thank you to Mrs Carroll, Mrs Fink, Ms Waters and Miss Susi for their dedication to supporting our students and Mareeba's Hard of Hearing community.  Without their dedication and support our school would not be able to showcase this unique choir.

This term the key message has been very clear, a strong start will ensure a successful finish and I want to congratulate our students who have ensured the beginning of term focused on regular attendance, engaged learning and following our school expectations both in the classroom and playground. Well done to those students who have been wearing our correct school uniform and clearly labelling personal items particularly hats and jumpers (both available for purchase from our school P&C run Uniform Shop open each morning from 8:30am).  We are also encouraging our learners to bring in a water bottle to stay hydrated.

It's that time of year again when we begin to welcome our families who have Preps enrolling for 2021 through our 2019 State Showcase award winning program, 'Foundations for Success'.  This program kicks off with our Prep Parent Information Night on Wednesday 22nd July and will see a Prep Observation morning on July 29th and Prep Open morning on August 5th.  These events allow our families to have the opportunity to hear about the programs on offer at Mareeba SS and see the current Prep classes in action.  Given the current COVID conditions we are required to ensure we enact our COVID guidelines including social distancing and hygiene regulations, and we will video all events for families to watch from the comfort of their homes. We do ask that any families who are unwell please do not attend.  For more information or to enrol a 2021 Prep student please contact our friendly front office staff, or click here to read more on our website.

In line with the current Qld State Schools COVID Operating guidelines we are fortunate to see our eagerly anticipated events returning to Mareeba SS in term 3.  These guidelines will continue to ensure the safety of our students and staff.  Some of these events include the return of excursions and camps including the ever popular year 6 camp, Parent Teacher Interviews in week 10, school photos, Year 6 High Tea, Under 8's Day and library borrowing.  With these we do ask that unwell staff and students not attend school and ask that our parent/guardian access remains restricted for the time being with drop offs to remain as is and parades to be held virtually each week.  Families are encouraged to like our Mareeba State School Facebook page to keep up to date with information and announcements and are welcome to come into school via our school front office for any appointments or information.
