Creative Generation—State Schools Onstage (CGEN) is a nationally renowned onstage spectacular show known for its outstanding and vibrant display of state school talent. Last year our very own Mareeba State School AUSLAN Signing Choir was successful in auditioning with 16 talented AUSLAN signers from MSS performing on a national stage as part of the shows very first combined AUSLAN Signing Choir. This year we were successful again in auditioning with 26 amazing students from both MSS and Mareeba State High School preparing to travel to perform again on the big stage. However, it was with a heavy heart that the CGEN team advised of the cancellation of Creative Generation—State Schools Onstage 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic.
But the show must go on and our talented students were invited to take part in the TV broadcast as part of the signing choir to perform Climb Every Mountain in a one-hour television special to be broadcast on Network Ten in September 2020. This broadcast will be a sneak peak of what was planned for the 2020 arena performance, and showcase the students who would have performed.
For the past 4 weeks students from both MSS and MSHS have been busily rehearsing in preparation for filming our contribution to the national broadcast under the professional guidance of Mrs Fletcher from Toowong State School in Brisbane, MSS EI Ms Susi and MSHS EI Ms Janelle Sclippa. On Friday we all came together with the talented Mr. Bennett and Ms. Lambert from Mareeba Highs Arts department and many takes later our performance was filmed. Our day was filled with many exciting surprises. We were visited by Mayor Toppin and the Express Newspaper, and Domino's Pizza delivered a very yummy lunch for us all to enjoy. Our day ended with a live Skype cross with our sister signing choir, Toowong State School, and together we performed Climb Every Mountain as we would have done on the big stage. It was wonderful watching staff and students from across schools, primary and high schools working together in partnership.
