Writers & Illustrators' Camp

Five year six students - Chelsea Morrison, Jillahkull McInnes, Samuel Hollins, Alara Nobelius and Aimee Seddon were chosen for their writing ability to attend the Writers & Illustrators Camp at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre in Innisfail.  This was a four day, jam-packed, industrious and exciting event.

Their teachers must be commended for choosing the right little people because this camp not only involves writing a story, it's loaded with much, much more.  First of all, there's the long drive down - starting at 6.30am - during which they laughed, sang and played games.  Then they have to meet and get along with 76 other students and 20 teachers from State Schools across the North.  They also have to do drawing and art classes as well as learn how to construct a Storyboard for their children's picture book, write their family history and paint 13 water colour pictures.  Sprinkled in between all this are meals, kitchen duties, tidying and sweeping out their cabins, lining up for morning and afternoon teas, free time and nightly activities like Mr. Gargan's famous Trivia Competition night, disco and movie night.

All in all, these wonderful, happy little vegemites coped admirably with this intense educational activity wherein the highlight for all of them was living and working with two real, live, well-known authors - Elizabeth Honey and Craig Smith.

It was my pleasure to take these lovely, conscientious students to this camp.

Yours in education,
Barbara Robinson
