Attendance Update

30/10/2019

We have had a strong start to term 4 with our overall school attendance currently sitting at 88.6%.  Our weekly attendance tracking is showing many classes with 100% days, so well done.  Our current <85% data is 26.5% as a whole school.  The FNQ target for this is 10%, so you can see we are well and truly overrepresented in this data.  Our staff work extremely hard to follow up on attendance and unexplained absences by making phone calls home, or home visits done by Marcia (FLO) and myself usually.

Our daily phone calls are a way of checking in with families to make sure everything and everyone are 'OK'.  It is very important that our front office staff have your most recent contact number to make sure we can check in with you.  Having the correct phone numbers also helps with first aid phone calls etc.  Please try and remember that not ALL phone calls from the school are a negative or bad thing!

The work on attendance continues this term and the planning into 2020 has also begun.  The school has currently adopted the 'John Moriarty Football (soccer) Program' that sees the coaches come to school on Tuesday and Thursday during lunch times.  This is a FREE program for all students, and most days there is up to 60 kids participating.  If these numbers continue, the school will look at extending days in 2020 and possibly some before and after school programs may happen.

A new initiative MSS is looking at is the ARTIE (Achieving Results through Indigenous Education) Program, which is focused on improving the attendance for our Indigenous students.  While typically a secondary school program, MSS has been invited to trial this program as we are a feeder school for MSHS, who have been on this program all year.  The program offers incentives to students who reach 90% attendance, and that is an awesome target as we have about 40% sitting in the <85% attendance space.  The ARTIE launch will take place on Thursday 31 October at 10am in the big hall.  The launch is for our Indigenous student group and interested parents.  Flyers and information packs will be sent home to families after this launch.  Please speak to Marcia or Emma for more information, or come to the hall and have a listen.

While I talk attendance all the time, it is bigger than that really.  The MSS focus is on student and family engagement in learning and education.  Our staff work tirelessly to provide relevant and interesting lessons and work hard to make the learning at levels for all students to participate and succeed.  Our school is all about being Inclusive, and engaging students and their families in the learning process is another way of acknowledging that we all belong at MSS.

While I am away on leave for the next three weeks, Emma Diamond will be filling in for me as Deputy Principal.  Emma and Marcia will continue tracking the student attendance, and making phone contacts or home visits as necessary, so please assist them in their work.  Please provide the ladies with feedback or good ideas if you have any.

See you all in week 7!
